Note: During their return journey from the Pole, Scott and his companions succumbed to exhaustion and frostbite, likely exacerbated by the disappointment of being beaten to their goal. They perished in an exceptionally severe blizzard. Scott’s final diary entry was dated 29 March 1912. Their tent, containing their bodies, was discovered on 12 November, along with his journal, which was later published as Volume 1. The scientific work conducted by the surviving members was compiled in Volume 2. The publication was an immediate success, with three editions printed in 1913 alone.
